Before a vaccine is authorized, the Department reviews extensive data filed by the sponsors, including results of clinical trials to assess vaccine safety, quality and efficacy in preventing or treating diseases.
Health Canada does so through a rigorous scientific review process.
Vaccine reviews are conducted by scientific and medical experts and are grounded in established regulatory standards for human vaccines in Canada.
Once vaccines are authorized, Health Canada releases information about the vaccine, including summaries of the data considered by Health Canada.
This includes non-clinical, clinical and other studies, as well as how the decision was made.
In relation to COVID-19 vaccines specifically, this information can be found on Health Canada’s website at COVID-19 vaccines and treatments portal.

In April 2020, the Government of Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, set up the COVID-19 Immunity Task
Force, a $300 million Grants and Contributions program in response to the emerging pandemic and a need for serological estimates of the number of Canadians infected with SARS-CoV2 to guide pandemic decision making.
Over its lifespan, the COVID‑19 Immunity Task Force generated research to underpin evidence-based decision around the
COVID‑19 pandemic response.
COVID‑19 Immunity Task Force serosurveys provided the only nationally representative picture of seroprevalence for COVID‑19 in Canada.
Insights have also contributed to a greater understanding of the safety and effectiveness of vaccines across different sub-populations, and the extent of immune protection arising from infection and/or vaccination.
